Which Form of Acaiberry is Best?
There are primarily four different forms of acai
available outside of Brazil as follows:
- Freeze dried acai berry powder.
This is available in capsules or in jars. This is our preferred form of acai. - Frozen acai pulp and skin.
- Acai berry juice.
- Acai berry extracts which are often used in juices and in many supplements.
The Freeze dried type is our favorite because the freeze-drying process captures the nutritional potency of the fruit and it is convenient to use. Whether it's in a capsule or spooned out from a jar, it is very easy to use. But we like the capsule form best.
Freeze dried acai berry should be refrigerated once the container is unsealed. The more the powder is exposed to air and moisture the quicker it will lose potency. Since the powder will degrade the more it is exposed, that's a good reason to stick with the capsules. The capsules provide more protection from the air and moisture than does a jar of powder which is being opened and closed everyday or often more than once a day.
For the best nutritional potency, we avoid the acai juices which we explain in the next section. The extracts make no sense to us at all because there are many excellent properties that make up the acai berry including the same healthy fat that you get in olive oil. So we don't want a mere part of the fruit, we want the whole thing. Also, be aware that many companies grind up the acai seed and use it in juice products and other acai products. There is little or no nutritional value in the seed or pit so we avoid it. Sometimes the seed, or pit, is listed on the label as "endocarp."
