Why Derek is an Engineering Leader
A 2007 Northeastern University graduate with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Derek McCretton is an experienced Automation Engineer within the industrial automation industry. Skilled in Allen-Bradley, process control, change control, control systems design and validation, Derek has more than 10 years under his belt at NeoMatrix where he primarily works on PLC and HMI/SCADA platform design with a specialization in biotechnology applications. One of Derek’s roles at NeoMatrix is to mentor young engineers. Derek truly embodies the core value of “build relationships” by providing an incredible level of mentoring to other automation engineers. His ongoing leadership and mentoring skills have helped drive key project deliverables – both within the organization and its customers.
Achievements, Advancement & Career-related Industry Contributions
Derek currently manages projects and customer accounts while acting as a technical lead for his projects. In addition to being Ignition Core Certified and OSHA 10 Certified, he currently works with several biotech companies and understands the GMP process.
Non-work-related Activities & Hobbies
Derek currently has a 2-year-old at home and twins on the way, so he doesn’t have much free time. But when he gets a chance, he likes to casually play video games, go to concerts and visit breweries. He was working on collecting bottle caps from unique breweries, but most of them have moved to cans.
Interesting Details
Derek is also an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church, which started when his friend asked him to officiate over his wedding. Derek also loves to sightsee and go on adventures. That’s his engineering curious nature side coming out. He isn’t the type of guy to lay on a beach.

“We just started entering a new industrial revolution and being an automation engineer you are at the forefront of Industry 4.0,” said Derek. “It is an exciting time to be an automation engineer with things like IIoT, AI and machine learning, and real-time data taking pace and just being a part of that advancement.”
